Beyonce - 'B'Day review [Aug. 25th, 2006|02:24 pm]

Beyonce's new release "B'Day" has been plagued by bad press since the title was leaked (see definition for "bidet"). Then the first single was released, along with a craptastic video and people were talking about how this is the nail in the coffin in regards to her career. I have to agree with them (the second single and accompanying video are even more terrible than the first and it just gets worse from there). Beyonce is an immensely talented performer, but this album written and recorded in the span of two weeks (!!!) shows that she is fallible and perhaps needs to get her ego in check. Melodies are non-existant; lyrics are nonsensical...I don't think there was any quality control on this. Shame.

Highlights? Hmmmmmmmmm...nothing stands out. Although I do like the background beat on 'Sugarmama' (but be warned - the lyrics for this one make "I Wanna Sex You Up" look like genuis). Download link: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=3A8902C17DE7BCA5

1/2 star out of 5.

Pluto gets the boot
Pluto no longer a planet, say astronomers

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AP) -- Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930.

The new definition of what is -- and isn't -- a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

Pluto is no stranger to controversy. In fact, it's been dogged by disputes ever since its discovery.

Discovered by Clyde Tombaugh of Arizona's Lowell Observatory, Pluto was classified as a planet because scientists initially believed it was the same size as Earth. It remained one because for years, it was the only known object in the Kuiper Belt, an enigmatic zone beyond Neptune that's teeming with comets and other planetary objects.

Pluto got an ego boost in 1978 when it was found to have a moon that was later named Charon. The Hubble turned up two more, which this past June were christened Nix and Hydra.

But in the 1990s, more powerful telescopes revealed numerous bodies similar to Pluto in the neighborhood. New observations also showed that Pluto's orbit was oblong, sending it soaring well above and beyond the main plane of the solar system where Earth and the other seven planets circle the sun.

That prompted some galactic grumbling from astronomers who began openly attacking Pluto's planethood.

At one point, things looked so bad for Pluto, the international union said publicly in 1999 that rumors of Pluto's imminent demise were greatly exaggerated and there were no plans to kick it out of the cosmic club.

A year later, the Hayden Planetarium at New York's American Museum of Natural History was accused of snubbing Pluto by excluding it from a solar system exhibition.

Pluto took another hit after Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology discovered 2003 UB313, a slightly larger Kuiper Belt object. What's the point, some astronomers wondered, in keeping Pluto as a planet?

Its future brightened earlier this year, when NASA sent the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto to get a closer look at the ball of rock and ice. The Hubble has managed to glimpse only its most prominent surface features; New Horizons, if all goes well, will arrive in 2015.

Rehab is not going as planned for god of the junkies Pete Doherty.

The troubled rocker reportedly punches a nurse in the chest and trashed his own room in the clinic where he's getting some much needed help.

Doherty's latest outburst happened Sunday night, when his gal pal was having a rollickin' good time with friends in Bali.

"I don't fucking want to be here," screamed Pete. "I've fucking had enough."

Doherty was threatened by staff that he'd be sedated if he didn't calm down, and he's now under the constant surveillance of a security guard.

Like it or not, Pete HAS to stay in rehab - by judges order - until his next court hearing in early September.

Good luck mate!

You want to buy a PSP, but black doesn't really go with your Hello Kitty Paris doll. Well, Sony and rocker P!nk have teamed up to solve your color coordination problems.

Sony Europe will release a pink PSP October 27th that comes with a UMD chock full of P!nk interviews, live performances and exclusive P!nk-related items. Now you can get your funky game on while grooving to hottie P!nk.

If the pink P!nk PSP isn't your style, Sony Europe also announced they will roll out a pink PS2, available October 8th (sorry P!nk fans, no P!nk goods are on this one).

Unfortunately the pink PSP and PS2 won't be released in North America. If you happen to be in Europe you can pick up the "girl empowering" hand-held for £169 which translates to about $320, while the PS2 will set you back £129.99 or about $245. Better book that British Airline tickets now before they sell out!

Good, Better, Best - Round 6 + The Evolution of Asslee Simpson [Aug. 21st, 2006|09:16 pm]

Ashlee Simpson built her early career living in the shadow of her more famous sister Jessica. With songs such as 'Shadow' & 'Invisible' detailing her struggle to create an identity, she started out being the underdog...then later morphed into an exact replica of her much hotter sibling. At the age of 22, she has already undergone rhinoplasty and collagen injections (amongst other procedures) to alter her appearance.

Killing two birds with one stone, here is The Evolution of Ashlee Simpson, as well as the next installment of Good, Better, Best: Round VI: the many faces of Ashlee Simpson - which is good, which is better, which is the best?

And here's my "favorite" Asslee video, 'Boyfriend' (youtube must have taken down all of her videos because this crappy remix is the only one I could find):

Hulk Hogan slipped into a neon yellow Speedo and snagged some rays (as if he needed any more) Saturday in Miami.

The champion of the ring slapped on a sleek pair of silver shades and took a dip in the pool. The recently turned 53 year-old deserves some credit for keeping up his body over the years

It's tough, but we admit we long for the the days where he would sport his famous red and yellow stretch pants.
